But where does one begin? Jessica Busa, head of special projects at Siyaka encourages brand owners to start by asking themselves: ‘How much do I know about the recyclability of my product? Is it made with recycled materials? What can I do to improve?’
For those grappling with these questions, Siyaka offers a guiding hand. The company’s specialised team dives deep into the components of a brand’s current labels – inks, adhesives, laminates and liners – to identify opportunities for enhancement that align with both budget and brand identity.
Siyaka brings a suite of sustainable solutions designed to elevate packaging while minimising environmental impact. Jessica explains: ‘One of the first steps in this process is transitioning to PET liners, which significantly improve the recyclability of the backing paper. By adopting thinner liners, brands can optimise production and reduce transportation costs, thanks to the lighter weight,’ she says.
According to Jessica, incorporating organic materials into the liner ensures it breaks down naturally, reducing the burden on landfills. ‘Additionally, water-based adhesives make the recycling process more efficient by allowing labels to be removed with ease, while solventless adhesives eliminate hazardous chemicals, making the production process safer and greener.’

Another critical improvement lies in downgauging facestock and substrates, which conserves resources and enhances production and transportation efficiencies. Siyaka also advocates for the use of materials certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), a move that supports responsible forestry practices. ‘Reverse printing on transparent laminates eliminates the need for additional facestock, further reducing resource consumption,’ she remarks.
A crucial aspect of sustainable labelling is the label’s ability to detach quickly and effectively from containers – whether glass, plastic or aluminium – ensuring that the container can be recycled or reused. Siyaka’s collaboration with global substrate innovators guarantees the supply of advanced packaging solutions tailored to meet specific sustainability goals.
As the drive for sustainability intensifies, Siyaka can help brand owners navigate the complexities of more environmentally responsible packaging. By asking the right questions and providing targeted solutions, these collaborators are not just adapting to change – they are leading it.
