This launch is not just a first for Engen but also a landmark achievement for the South African lubricant market. We spoke with Debra Martin, key accounts manager for ALPLA Durban, to delve deeper into this revolutionary development.
The production team at ALPLA Durban have started producing a 500ml bottle for Engen, marking a groundbreaking achievement in South Africa. Engen is the first lubricant manufacturer in the country to introduce a three-layer PCR plastic bottle. Engen is leading the charge to better sustainability and other oil companies are sure to follow.
This innovative bottle design incorporates three layers, with the PCR material securely embedded in the middle layer. This ensures that the outer and inner layers are free from any recycled content. ‘We’re using PCR, which is made from recycled HDPE (rHDPE),’ comments Debra.
She explains that one of the key advantages of this three-layer construction is the consistent coloration it offers. ‘Our design ensures that the colour remains uniform and vibrant, essential for maintaining brand integrity.’
These bottles represent a significant investment in sustainable technology. This ALPLA innovation is part of a broader global trend where leading FMCG manufacturers, have already adopted three-layer PCR technology in their packaging.
The impetus for this shift towards more sustainable packaging solutions is driven by increasing regulatory pressures and a growing awareness of environmental responsibilities. ALPLA Durban’s proactive approach in showcasing the benefits of its technology to Engen highlights the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. ‘We approached Engen to show them the benefits of the three-layer PCR bottle, our technology aligned to Engen’s recycled packaging adoption strategy, and they loved it,’ Debra enthuses.
ALPLA’s breakthrough in packaging not only sets a new benchmark in the lubricant industry but also paves the way for more environmentally responsible practices, ensuring
