From humble beginnings in Amalgam, Johannesburg in 2009, with a modest team of a few individuals, Anchortape has expanded its product portfolio and service offerings, catering to diverse industry sectors. ‘Through dedication, an enthusiastic team and the support of our valued customers, we’ve experienced tremendous growth,’ comments national sales director, Francoise Palmer.
Anchortape has extended far beyond its initial location, with branches now established in Durban and Cape Town as well as a robust presence in surrounding areas and neighbouring countries.
One of Anchortape’s most significant milestones occurred in 2021, with the completion of its new headquarters – a state-of-the-art office, manufacturing and converting facility. ‘This milestone not only symbolises our progress and success, it also signifies a new chapter in Anchortape’s journey,’ Francoise enthuses.
Reflecting on the past 15 years, Sham Maharaj, acknowledges the challenges as an importer and converter, posed by fluctuating raw material costs, exchange rates and shipping expenses. However, through proactive monitoring and strategic partnerships, Anchortape has successfully navigated these hurdles, ensuring uninterrupted supply chain operations and competitive pricing for its products. ‘We’ve built strong partnerships with our suppliers and service providers. This enables us to offer manufacturing excellence and ultimate customer satisfaction,’ Sham explains.
Diverse offering
Anchortape’s diverse range of self-adhesive tapes features various adhesive technologies, providing unparalleled flexibility to cater to the unique requirements of different market sectors. ‘Our high-performance tapes, offer cutting-edge solutions for all manual or automatic case sealing applications. Our tapes are designed to adhere to all types of corrugated board including those with high recycled content. Due to the nature of the adhesive the tapes offer immediate tack, strong holding power and are they are able to withstand various temperature fluctuations,’ Sham comments.
According to him, Anchortape is able to personalise and brand tapes to meet customer requirements, be it for marketing or security purposes. ‘We’re proud to offer the option of sandwich print technology (or under surface print) The customer print is embedded in between the film and the adhesive, making rubbing off or tampering with the print impossible. The printing and adhesive coating process is carried out locally, which allows us to produce the highest quality branded tapes in minimal turnaround time.’
Anchortape is taking significant steps towards sustainability by sourcing biodegradable BOPP film and incorporating recycled PET film into its products. ‘By embracing these eco-friendly materials, we aim to reduce our reliance on non-renewable resources and decrease waste generation,’ Sham remarks.
The Anchor Automation division offers comprehensive end-of line solutions, from semi- to fully-automatic equipment for box erecting, case sealing, stretch wrapping and palletising. ‘Our dedicated technicians, trained by OEMs, ensure efficient installation, maintenance and servicing, minimising downtime for our customers. With original parts stocked locally, we guarantee prompt service and turnaround times, mitigating potential disruptions due to unforeseen breakdowns,’ he enthuses.
In the graphics sector, Anchortape is the authorised distributor for Lohmann offering superior flexo printing solutions in South Africa and surrounds. This includes the Lohmann DuploFLEX® range of cushion mounting tapes, tailored for both narrow and wide web printing. Sham confirms that these products deliver reliable and precision printing quality, ensuring exceptional results for Anchortape’s customers.
Investing in top technologies
Anchortape has ambitious goals and aspirations focused on growth, innovation and market expansion. One pivotal step in this journey involves the installation of a cutting-edge water-based acrylic coating line sourced from Italy. ‘This strategic move aims to broaden our product range and signifies our commitment to enhancing product quality and performance,’ he emphasises.
Winds of change
Sham is excited to announce some significant changes within the team as they pave the way for the future of Anchortape. Effective January 2025, Francoise Palmer will step into the role of CEO, bringing her extensive experience and leadership skills forward in guiding the company.
In terms of operational structure, Shamir Maharaj will take on the responsibility for production and special projects, with support from Tavash Naicker, who will oversee machine maintenance and engineering, while Petronella Chikwana will manage finance and imports.
On the equipment front, Anchortape is eagerly anticipating the arrival of its new Guzzetti TS 360 slitter-rewinder and Techniwater 300 coating machine. ‘These state-of-the-art additions, combined with our existing machinery, will significantly enhance our production capabilities, allowing us to manufacture 2 000m rolls of adhesive tape with increased efficiency and precision. This investment in slitting and coating technology will position Anchortape for continued growth and success in the years ahead,’ he enthuses.
A vote of confidence from F.S.S
As Anchortape commemorates its 15th anniversary, it’s a moment to reflect on the enduring partnerships that have fuelled its success.
