The business originated in 1989 as a litho printing shop, based in Johannesburg’s Eloff Street. It was from here that Tommy and his then business partner paved the way for growth by providing an unparalleled print service.
By 1994, Ren-Form had relocated to larger premises in the heart of Selby, and today occupies the entire corner block at the intersection of Trump and Booysens Roads.
Now solely owned by the Du Sart family, and considered one of South Africa’s most successful commercial printing operations, Ren-Form implements stringent and sustained employment equity, social responsibility and skills development programmes, plus BEE initiatives such as procurement and enterprise development.
‘Since inception, we’ve endeavoured to provide the best service and top-quality print, using state-of-the-art technology,’ comments Tommy. ‘We’re a multifaceted printing specialist, producing magazines, catalogues, continuous forms, web printing, scratch cards, digital print-on-demand and variable data security printing to multinational and independent companies in South Africa and SADC countries,’ he adds.
In short, Ren-Form’s modern production facilities are designed and equipped to facilitate projects from preparation through to distribution and Tommy takes extreme pride in his employees and the innovative products and services they deliver.
Leading-edge IML production
With an established line-up of printing equipment that meets a spectrum of commercial printing requirements, Tommy has taken the ambitious step to set up a cutting-edge in-mould label (IML) production company called Ren-Flex, situated just a stone’s throw away from Ren-Form’s Selby plant.
‘With our strong history in rotary printing, the migration from paper to plastic has been a seamless process,’ remarks Tommy. ‘With the assistance of industry consultants we’ve now established a contemporary printing, die-cutting and finishing enterprise that’s second-to-none.’
Housed in a specially-designed temperature- controlled factory, the impressive equipment line-up includes a Drent Goebel Vision nine-colour web offset press, with three extra flexo stations, manufactured by Drent and supported by Holland-based DG Press Services. Designed specifically for IML applications, the Ren-Flex press reaches speeds up to 250m/min. It’s fitted with a Harris & Bruno varnish unit, in-line perforation and a Martin Automatic continuous splice system. An ultra-modern Schober automated die-cutting machine – only the second in Africa – ensures top quality label finishing.
The Ren-Form group is FOGRA certified and handles label designs received via InDesign software. In addition, it has recently taken ownership of a brand-new Kodak Trendsetter CtP system from Antalis, providing a dedicated top-quality platemaking service.
Ren-Flex technicians and machine operators are factory trained and a dedicated in-house maintenance crew has access to critical spare parts. Each OEM also provides 24-hour electronic assistance if required.
‘We’re sending a clear message to the packaging market that we mean business at Ren-Flex,’ declares Tommy. ‘Much has been invested in cultivating a strong position. We’re confident we can raise the perception of quality and consistency and show our customers that we’ll exceed their expectations with the largest selection of IML products in South Africa,’ he says bullishly.
Film is sourced directly from Treofan (Germany) and Yupo (US), and Ren-Flex’s diverse selection includes brilliantly printed and functional thin film labels, special effect, metallic, colour change, textured and durable laminated labels.
‘Thanks to our meticulous attention to detail and rigorous quality control, customers receive labels that are colour specific and fully functional. We work closely with leading plastics moulders to help them convert to IML technology to ensure that brands achieve full market potential. Whether its small-, medium- or large-volume label quantities for FMCG, dairy, paint, automotive, chemical, industrial or oil products, we have the expertise and capacity to deliver time and again!’ Tommy concludes.
