As a demonstration of its commitment to environmentally responsible and sustainable manufacturing processes, as well as extended producer responsibility, Twinsaver recently signed up as a member of the Polystyrene Association of SA – the producer responsibility organisation (PRO) responsible for collecting and recycling post-consumer and post-industrial polystyrene.
‘We wanted to join a PRO, consisting of likeminded companies, which would enable us to meet our sustainability goals,’ explains, group product & technical development lead, Tessa-Marie Grobbelaar.
According to Tessa-Marie, the fact that 50% of all the company’s products are made from 100% recycled material is a prime example of its commitment to environmental footprint reduction. Others examples are Twinsaver’s use of a chlorine-free, sulphate-based bleaching agent and the supply of over 80% of its sludge by-product to local brickmakers.
She points out that the company also provides much-needed income to communities by sourcing recycled fibre through informal collectors, and recycles over 72 000 tons of waste/annum.
