Traditionally, Pinetown Printers has focused on publishing and general printing, but a recent investment in a Komori Lithrone four-colour offset press has helped broaden its offerings. Coupled with its HP Indigo 5000 plus other printing equipment, the new Komori means that Pinetown Printers can now offer a comprehensive array of services, from short-run digital to high-volume litho.
Purchased at Ipex 2010, through local agent, Kemtek Imaging Systems, the Komori LS440P press is the first in its series that’s equipped with KHS-AI and Smart Sequence, offering swift makeready. It’s a high productivity machine that provides quick turnaround and short-run competencies, as well as on-press proofing.
It accommodates a wide range of substrates and prints on both light and heavy stock. It is superb as an added-value press to deliver high-end printing on packaging, labels and cards. Its mechanical configuration, based on a double-size cylinder design, makes the press well suited to work on heavy stock because of the excellent sheet transfer and movement characteristics, high dot reproducibility, and superior inking and distribution.
Ultra-short-run efficiency is possible with high-speed startup; 16 000 sheets/hour maximum printing speed; and quick changeover for thick sheets – with
a maximum sheet size of 720mm x 1 030mm.
New technology elements include air presets, roller-free feeder, improved self-diagnostics, presoaked cleaning cloth to reduce harmful waste chemicals, and high-speed stabilisation. According to Komori, because of quick makeready, less waste is produced and only alcohol-free fountain solutions are used, improving its environmental footprint.
‘In addition to its technological and environmental improvements, the new press comes with an upgraded software package that enables improved networking capabilities,’ declares Mark Samouilhan, co-director of Pinetown Printers. ‘With two Komori presses on site, the other being a five-colour Lithrone LS540 plus coater, it gives us greater leverage and versatility. With identical specifications, both presses offer quality long runs, while providing us with more capacity. We’ve also experienced a very smooth operator transition from our older press to the LS440, thanks to Kemtek’s ongoing support and in-house operator training,’ Mark adds.
‘This is a busy factory with over 130 employees and it is imperative that all operators are quickly proficient in their relevant workstations.’
All printing processes at Pinetown Printers are complemented by extensive in-house finishing resources, such as film laminating, die-cutting, wiro-binding, foiling, embossing, twin-coating and aqueous coating, silk screening, twin binding, folding, saddle stitching, PUR binding, and hard cover production.
