Founded in 1998 by visionary Tony Rich, Ceramic Anilox Engravers (CAE) set out to break South Africa’s dependence on imported anilox technology. From its humble beginnings in a small shed in Witbank (now eMalahleni), Mpumalanga, CAE has skyrocketed to occupy a cutting-edge 5 000m² ISO 9001-certified facility in Redhill, KwaZulu-Natal.
Tony’s sons, Paul and Neil, have been part of CAE from the ground up – starting with sweeping the floors. Today, Paul serves as technical director and Neil as managing director, both having truly stepped up over the past five years to take full control of the business. With their leadership driving the company forward, Tony has transitioned into retirement.
Reflecting on the company’s origins, Paul recalls: ‘My dad’s goal was simple: to build a proudly South African facility that could serve our local printing industry with world-class products. Today, we have achieved that, and more. We’re exporting our advanced anilox technology to over 75 countries.’
Paul and Neil have been instrumental in transforming CAE into what it is today. Their leadership has been crucial in driving the company’s recent growth, which has seen a staggering 60% increase in business over the past two years.
Innovation at the forefront
At the heart of CAE’s recent success lies its commitment to innovation. The introduction of its eCell (HD) anilox transfer technology has revolutionised how printers achieve higher print quality and improved definition. Paul explains: ‘The eCell technology is an advanced high-definition anilox transfer system designed to help printers achieve superior results without the need for costly plate screen changes. The unique elongated cell shape dramatically improves ink transfer, ensuring better density and opacity. We’re proud to say that 80% of the South African print industry has now adopted this technology and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.’
eCell’s success is a testament to CAE’s dedication to not only staying ahead of industry trends, but also educating customers on the best practices for anilox use and maintenance. ‘We don’t just sell technology, we provide ongoing support, training and consultation to ensure our customers get the most out of their investment,’ adds Neil. ‘We feel a responsibility to elevate the entire industry.’
A major factor that sets CAE apart is its investment in cutting-edge technologies. Over the past five years, the company has replaced much of its older machinery with state-of-the-art equipment, including high-level CNC machines and advanced laser engraving systems.
CAE’s forward-thinking approach has secured its dominance in the South African market and opened doors internationally. With exports to over 75 countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Italy and Turkey, CAE is flying the flag high for South African manufacturing. ‘We’ve made significant inroads into European and international markets, where there’s often scepticism about products coming from this part of the world,’ Paul remarks. ‘But, once they see the quality of our work, that scepticism quickly turns to trust. We’re proud to be changing perceptions about what South African companies can achieve.’
At drupa 2024, CAE showcased several exciting developments, including its partnership with Netherlands-based LaserClean, offering an eco-friendly solution for anilox roller cleaning. This system eliminates the need for chemicals, water and waste disposal fees while reducing downtime, risk of roller damage and corrosion. By restoring cell volume and surface tension, it extends the lifespan of anilox rollers, particularly those with higher screen counts. CAE now offers this service at its Durban facility.
The brothers also announced a strategic partnership with Italy-based BFT to introduce carbon fibre doctor blade chambers and ink management systems. Together, these solutions aim to enhance print quality, boost efficiency and lower ink consumption for converters globally.
A legacy of value
Despite its impressive growth and international expansion, CAE remains a family-owned business, a fact that both Paul and Neil emphasise with pride. ‘We run this company with genuine family values,’ Paul states. ‘It’s not just about growing bigger, it’s about maintaining the personal touch and attention to detail that have always been at the core of CAE.’
Neil adds: ‘When we started, our goal wasn’t to be the biggest, but to be the best in terms of quality and customer service. That’s what we’ve stuck to and I think that’s why our customers stay with us for the
long haul. They know that when they work with us, they’re getting a partner who genuinely cares about their success.’
In addition to technological advancements, CAE is committed to upskilling its workforce and educating the broader printing industry. This commitment to education extends to customers as well. ‘We regularly offer training and consultation services to help printers optimise their operations,’ Paul explains. ‘It’s not just about selling a product, it’s about providing the tools and knowledge that will help our customers succeed in the long term.’
For Paul and Neil, it’s about more than just running a business, it’s about creating a legacy of passion, pride and quality, both for the company and for South Africa. ‘We take immense pride in flying the South African flag high, showing the world what a boutique supplier with heart can achieve, all while making a meaningful impact at home.’
Looking to the future
As CAE celebrates its 25th anniversary, the company is looking ahead to the next chapter in its journey. ‘We’re not resting on our laurels,’ says Paul. ‘There’s always room for improvement and innovation. We’re exploring new technologies and expanding our product offerings to ensure we continue to meet the evolving needs of the flexographic industry.’
Neil concurs, adding: ‘We’re also expanding our international presence and exploring new markets.
The future looks incredibly bright for CAE and we’re excited for what’s to come.’
Ceramic Anilox Engravers’ 25-year journey is a remarkable story of a small family business that grew into a global leader in anilox transfer technology. Through a relentless commitment to quality, innovation and customer service, CAE has established itself as a trusted partner to printers both in South Africa and abroad. As Paul, Neil and the entire CAE team look to the future, one thing is certain: the next 25 years will be just as exciting as the first.
