To give real meaning to the promise of reusability, Nampak Megapak has partnered with Mauser’s reconditioning subsidiary, National Container Group (NCG), whose service includes picking up empty IBCs from customers’ premises, cleaning them with the latest environmentally-friendly processes and products, removing dents, carrying out inspections and leak testing, and returning them to customers for reuse. IBCs that can’t be reconditioned are recycled.
NCG also operates a comprehensive worldwide collection and reconditioning programme for IBCs of South African origin. ‘Through this programme we’re able to provide the convenience and functionality of a world-class packaging system while delivering an environmentally-friendly service,’ Joel adds.
Multimillion rand investment
Nampak Megapak has made a multimillion rand investment in technology to manufacture IBCs under licence from Mauser. Each IBC comprises three components – a container, a cage and a pallet.
Blow-moulded from UV-stabilised HDPE, these IBCs are suitable for a variety of liquid products – chemicals, food, oil and pharmaceuticals – and are translucent for better visibility and easy inspection.
For the steel cages that house the HDPE containers, zinc-coated tubes are sourced from Mauser; engineering and welding is carried out at Megapak’s ISO 9001:2008-accredited Pinetown (KZN) facility.
Each IBC is supplied with an integrated pallet, using Mauser-approved designs in materials such as heat-treated wood and plastics/steel composites. A runner and frame for automatic filling lines and storage racks is also included.
Finally, a comprehensive choice of valves and closures is available. Some optional features are top openings for dispensing systems, special gaskets and venting. Discharge valves are easily replaced as they’re not welded into the container.
Also offered are two steel plates for labelling, as well as technical support for filling, closing, warehousing, transporting, storing, shipping and load securing.
Nampak Megapak is a founding member of the SA Industrial Container Reconditioning Association and a member of the International Confederation of Plastic Packaging Manufacturers.
‘Our long-term partnership with Mauser is a logical extension of our shared portfolio of interests. We’re looking forward to its growth in South Africa and the rest of Africa, especially for customers wanting to leverage scale for economic savings while reducing the impact of bulk logistics handling on the environment,’ Joel concludes.
