Next-generation white kraft paper

Under the slogan ‘Something new is rolling towards you’, a €70-million paper machine has gone live at Mondi’s Štetí mill in the Czech Republic. This latest machine – PM7 – will produce white kraft paper, primarily for industrial bags and shopping bags.

According to Mondi Packaging Paper CEO, Clemens Willée, this exciting project allows the company to offer white kraft paper with a combination of exceptionally good printability and high strength. ‘The machine’s precision also guarantees significantly smoother paper surfaces,’ he adds.

Raising the bar

Employing a sustainable manufacturing strategy, Nairobi-based GPL Flexibles is staying ahead of the game, reports Karen Stretch.

In 2009, already playing a leading role in the East African flexible packaging sector, GPL Flexibles further cemented its lead with the receipt of an ‘Out of Africa’ accolade in the Gold Pack Awards.

Fast-forward five years and this Nairobi-based packaging business is booming, so-much-so that CEO and owner, Ketul Tanna, has embarked on an ambitious investment programme aimed at strengthening  production efficiencies, improving GPL’s green credentials, and elevating the group to ‘preferred supplier’ status among some of the world’s best-known brands.

Queen rewards ‘Best of British’ businesses

This year, more than one hundred UK businesses earned Queen’s Awards for their international trade. Among them is Scotland’s Paragon Inks, a company that’s well entrenched in South Africa. GILL LOUBSER tracks the story.

Paragon Inks, supplier of UV inks and coatings for packaging and product-decoration markets in many parts of the world, has been named as a winner in the 2014 Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, a prestigious accolade for any UK business.

Companies applying for the Queen’s Award for Enterprise undergo a rigorous entry protocol. The process is highly competitive and this year, from thousands of entries, a total of 162 awards were granted in three categories – Innovation, International Trade and Sustainability.

A right royal occasion

Two momentous happenings marked the 35th anniversary of the International Greetings Group’s plant in Wales. The event, held in April, was attended by Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh; and a second line of Uteco’s Diamond HP flexo press was unveiled.

The International Greetings Group (IGG), a global leader in the gift paper sector with plants in many countries, has Uteco presses at its plants in the UK and The Netherlands. As a strategic technological partner, Uteco group CEO Aldo Peretti was invited to the IGG event and was able to introduce his company to the royal visitors. After observing the press in action and inspecting some of its excellent quality output, they went on to unveil a commemorative plaque (which mentions the Uteco press).

Xeikon Café is a hit

Some 400 visitors from 48 countries descended on Xeikon’s premises at Lier in Belgium to attend the Xeikon Café. Gill Loubser was among them and reports.

The words ‘Xeikon Café’ conjured up a variety of possibilities … to what was I being invited? Was it a café, a bar, a restaurant where we’d enjoy some type of entertainment? Was music, dancing or comedy on the menu? In the event, such random thoughts were off the mark! At the company’s headquarters at Lier in Belgium, over a period of three days, Xeikon and 28 partner companies delivered a world-class event that included live demonstrations of digital label and packaging printing in action, plus dozens of business and technical presentations.
